SIR MIX-A-LOT DROPS THE NEEDLE 2022 STYLE

“Baby Got Back”: Hologram Music Video Wraps Production

Get ready - multi-platinum and #1 artist Sir Mix-A-Lot is about to shock the world, delivering his music in groundbreaking ways 30 years after the release of “Baby Got Back”.

We know Sir Mix-A-Lot likes ‘em round, but 2D video has always struggled to capture that concept in its full glory.

On March 15th in Seattle, Washington, Sir Mix-A-Lot and Popins completed the principal photography for an original 3D live performance of “Baby Got Back” in a volumetric video capture studio. The result will be a photo-realistic hologram of Sir Mix-A-Lot performing the song that anyone with a smartphone or other smart device will be able to view and interact with.

In Mix’s words, “I’m trippin’, I’m surrounded by cameras, this is cool right here. Popins and Omnivor are creating an experience that you’ve got to be ready for. This 3D stuff is hot – it’s like a hundred and some cameras – trust me, this experience is gonna be fresh, it’s gonna be new, and it’s gonna be yours.”

Christina Calio, Co-founder of Popins, stated: “We’ve had a great time creating 3D music videos with a variety of artists from several genres. Collaborating with Sir Mix-A-Lot is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that shows just how far video has come in 30 years. In 1992 we watched “Baby Got Back” from our couches on MTV; now in 2022 we can bring him to life in our own rooms and dance side-by-side with the legend himself.”

Adam Kirk, CEO of Omnivor, adds that “Sir Mix-A-Lot’s holographic performance will show there’s a new, more engaging way to enjoy content in AR. Music fans are going to love the new experience, and we’re excited to see how people create and share their perspective on this performance.”

“Creating photo-realistic 3D digital content moves the bar beyond avatars and opens doors that were unimaginable just 30 years ago. Not only can we make entertainers available to the world as AR through smart devices, but we can also use the same content to create novel performances in the metaverse. The future of the metaverse is 3D and the future of 3D is photo-realism,” added Bryan Lee, Popins Co-Founder.

Bryan goes on to say: “Popins and Omnivor are world leaders in the production of on-demand volumetric video, and we are at the forefront of real-time live 3D video communication. On May 7th, exactly 30 years after the release of the Rick Rubin executive-produced “Baby Got Back”, 20 hand-picked fans and journalists will be invited to join Sir Mix-A-Lot for a live holographic press conference in the metaverse.”

About Sir Mix-A-Lot

Seattle hip-hop pioneer Sir Mix-A-Lot secured his place in music history with the 1992 booty-worshipping novelty smash “Baby Got Back.”

Sir Mix-A-Lot’s 1988 debut album, Swass, yielded the hit “Posse on Broadway” and went platinum in 1990.

In 1991, Sir Mix-A-Lot signed to Rick Rubin’s Def American Recordings. The following year, he dropped “Baby Got Back,” off his major-label debut album, Mack Daddy. Thanks in part to its bootylicious music video, the single spent five weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 and won a Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance.

“Baby Got Back” reentered the cultural discourse in 2014, when Nicki Minaj sampled the song for her single “Anaconda,” which earned a Grammy nomination and peaked at No. 2 on the Hot 100.
